Charles Eugene Mertz

Apr. 9, 1944– Apr. 6, 2024

Charles Eugene Mertz, age 79, entered into rest on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Minneapolis Healthcare & Rehab Center, in Minneapolis, Kansas. He was born on April 9, 1944, in Beloit, Kansas, to Henry and Dorothy (Swinton) Mertz.

Charlie graduated from high school in Downs, Kansas, in 1963.

On June 12, 1964, Charlie married the love of his life, Cheryll Irene Rubottom in Woodston, Kansas.

From 1964 to 1970 Charlie was in the National Guard. He was also involved in the Masonic Lodge for over 40 years.

Charlie, as most everyone called him, had a lifelong career in welding. This began in 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio, at Lincoln Electric. While there, he also taught welding. He chose to retire from Sunflower Mfg. in Beloit, Kansas, in 2009.

His hobbies included fishing, woodworking, and coaching baseball. After retiring, he was able to enjoying watching his grandson play baseball. Charlie was an avid Kansas City Royals fan.

Survivors include his wife Cheryll Mertz of 59 years of the home in Minneapolis, KS; son, Mark (Gail) Mertz, TX; and their children, Savanna (Isaac) Mertz, TX; Collin Mertz, TX; daughter, Missy (Rome) Witt, Minneapolis, KS; their son, Logan Elliott and his fiancée, Riley Shanks, both of Lincoln, NE. Brother, Larry (Connie) Mertz of Mulvane, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Highland Cemetery Columbarium, Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Minneapolis Recreation Commission for youth baseball and may be left in care of Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 166, Minneapolis, KS 67467.
