John Stevens

Aug. 16, 1932 – Feb. 13, 2024

Elijah John Stevens was born August 16, 1932, to Elijah and Beatrice Stevens in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. He was one of nine siblings. John worked from a young age, working in the county carpentry department, at the Lichfield Foundry, and at St. Michael’s Hospital as a nursing assistant.

John started his formal nurse training at Clare Manor Hospital, in Hertfordshire. His training was interrupted when he joined the Royal Army Medical Corp. After his service, he finished his nurse’s training as a State Registered Nurse, and a Registered Mental Nurse and joined the nursing staff at Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire. In 1976 he took a position as Nurse Advisor at the Royal College of Nursing in London.

Upon retirement, John travelled extensively with his wife, Una, including many trips to Beloit to visit his daughter Lesley and her family.

John was a kind and caring gentleman who leaves behind his loving wife, Una, Burntwood, Staffordshire, England; son, Paul and wife, Sue, Cocoa Beach, Florida; daughters, Lesley and husband, Bob Gentry, Beloit, Kansas; Karen and husband, Geoff Blofield, Norfolk, England; his grandchildren, Jamie (Mike St. John), Paul Gentry (Darci), Beloit; and his three great-grandchildren, Bentley, Rynleigh and Huxton.

A service to celebrate John’s life was held February 29, 2024, at the Lichfield and District Crematorium in England.
