Beloit opens global children’s Christmas charity drop-off’s
BELOIT — This month, Beloit First Christian Church, 321 N. Mill St., will serve as a drop-off location for the Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child, joining nearly 5,000 U.S. locations collecting gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need around the world.
During the project’s National Collection Week, Nov. 16-23, Beloit residents will transform empty shoeboxes into gifts of hope filled with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items. After being dropped off, Operation Christmas Child will deliver these shoebox gifts to children living in poverty overseas.
This year, Beloit-area residents hope to contribute more than 450 shoebox gifts toward the 2020 global goal of reaching 11 million children.
Residents in Beloit or the surrounding area can come by the church to pick up an Operation Christmas Child shoe box. They can also use their own shoebox. Shoe boxes are then filled with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys, such as a doll or soccer ball.
A letter and a picture of the person or family making the donation are encouraged. Information on what to put in a shoe box is available at the church or visit samaritanspurse.org/occ.
“We have an opportunity in Beloit to give these simple shoebox gifts that will make a lasting impact on children across the world,” said Beloit volunteer Chris Miller, who has participated in Operation Christmas Child for two years. First Christian Church and area supporters have participated in Operation Christmas Child for over 15 years.
“For many of these children, this shoebox is the first gift they have ever received. It sends a message that God loves them, and they are not forgotten,” she said.
