St. John's Scholars Bowl State Bound
BELOIT –St. John’s Catholic School recently qualified for the 2020 scholars’ bowl state championship tournament, under the direction of Math/Chemistry/Physics teacher Rusty Lueger, after finishing second at the regional tournament in Lincoln. The Blujays were led by senior Benjamin Walter, who answered 24 questions correctly. However, a total team effort helped secure the runner-up finish. Seniors Braden Dameron and Jadyn Rosebaugh, sophomore Ben Thompson, and freshman Sergio Lopez rounded out the team, each scoring at least 80 points. Senior Brandon Bates served as the alternate and also scored in limited rounds.
The Blujays will compete at Goessel High School on Saturday, Feb. 15, beginning at noon. Sixteen teams will compete in two separate pools. The top three teams from each pool will advance to finals, where these six teams will compete for the state championship trophy. After falling just short of finals last year, St. John’s aims to make it to finals and return to Beloit with its third scholars’ bowl state championship trophy.
