WEE Kids Christmas project underway

BELOIT – An opportunity for children up to sixth grade to shop for Christmas gifts for their families is being planned this holiday season in Beloit.

“We always think of Christmas as a special time to give gifts to children,” says Alice Colby, Beloit, spokesperson for the project which will be headed up by a steering committee from several local churches. “We sometimes forget that kids would also be excited to have the experience to select special gifts to give to those they love, but don’t have much money of their own to spend.”

The WEE Kids project is asking community members to set aside “white elephant” items--new or like new items for men, women and children that children could “regift” to their family members. A WEE Kids Shopping date will be announced at a later where children can come and shop for their parents, grandparents and siblings. All items will be priced at 25-cents. Tentative plans call for two shopping time events in early December.

Suggested gift items might be jewelry, scarves, unopened lotions or perfumes, household decor items, kitchen towels, devotional books for women; gently used toys, games and books for children; and gift items for men like caps, rain gauges, playing cards, small tools, books or cologne.

“As people clean or plan garage sales for summer, we’re asking that they consider donating some of those items for the WEE Kids store,” said Colby. “We ask that people consider only like new, gently used, clean “white elephants” that children would be excited to give as a gift to family members.”

The event will be open to all children (no income requirements), and helpers will be available to assist them to fill their gift lists and wrap their presents. Donations of Christmas wrapping paper and gift bags would also be appreciated.

Anyone with questions should contact Colby at 785-569-1317. More information about a drop off point for donations and opportunities to volunteer to wrap presents or host parents while they wait for their children to shop will be announced at a later date.
