Mural history

The historical Williams and Finnegan building which was erected in 1872 has two big mural wall which were used for advertising for decades. Today these two murals (now the Waconda Trader building) share imagery that depicts the heart of Beloit’s branding and economy. The left panel is a rendering of Beloit’s patron Saint Ruth, who is many times shown gleaning wheat from the field. The original painting of 'Ruth” for Beloit was completed by Josie Eresch in 1915 and is in the Mitchell County Museum’s permanent collection holdings. The slogan “ Queen City of the Solomon” was first used in 1877 and was made famous by newspapers through out the state of Kansas until it was dropped in 1970s. The right panel shows Beloit’s first major commerce, milling, The Beloit City Mills were built in 1871 milling grade A flour both day and night, It sold to Farmway Co-op in 1945 being strictly run for animal feed. It was tom down in 1975 after being at the head of Mill Street in Beloit for 104 years,

Each year, the employees at Solomon Valley Bank, a branch of First National Bank and Trust, choose a community organization to donate to. Throughout the year, they personally contribute to the community contribution fund, which First National Bank and Trust then matches.
