Earthquake shakes Mitchell County

A 2. 7 earthquake was felt around the Cawker City, Downs area on Sunday afternoon around 2 p.m. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was located 3 miles west/northwest of Cawker City. It was initially reported a magnitude 3.3 quake. There were no injuries reported but shakes were felt and a loud news was heard. The area is said to be a very low earthquake risk, with a total of 40 earthquakes reported since 1931. The largest earthquake was within 30 miles of Cawker City at a 3.9 magnitude in 2017. The USGS database shows there is a 0.27% chance of a major earthquake within 50 km of Cawker within the next 50 years.

Prochaska earns World Record Cantaloupe title

Tony Prochaska, of Simpson, does it again, this time weighing in a World Record Colossal Cantaloupe on Wednesday afternoon at 76.12 pounds. It was recorded on an official Kansas certified scale provided by Solomon Valley Home Center. Prochaska says he still has four more to pick after this one but is sure this is the final winner. “ I always knew this was going to be the one,” said Prochaska. “ It was special from the start.” Last years biggest cantaloupe he weighed in was at 64.16 pounds which qualified him for one of the largest melons in the nation. This years for surpassed that record and then some. Watermelons are still in the standing for Prochaska after last years 225 pound champion at the Washington State Park in Arkansas.
