Martin “Martinus or Peanuts” Kohler, 89, Beloit
BELOIT – Martin Edward Kohler was born on November 18, 1929, the oldest of nine children to Joseph Sr. and Catherine Sehi Kohler in Paris, Arkansas. He died Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 89.
Martinus or Peanuts, as he was known by many, grew up in Arkansas before hitchhiking his way to Kansas, where he ended up helping on a harvest crew. He then entered the Marine Corps and served in the Korean War.
On November 20, 1954, he married Martha T. Kramer and shortly after they were married, they moved to Beloit, where he went to work for Bob Thierolf. He then went into business with his brother Joe to form Kohler’s Garage, where he worked until his retirement. As a mechanic, he spent countless hours working on trucks. In his later years, he always loved getting in his car to drive around and watch harvest crews, and to look at the crops.
In his spare time, he also enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling. He especially enjoyed his annual Marine reunion trips with the old Marine friends.
He was a faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church, was a 4th Degree Knight, and a member of the VFW Post #6242, American Legion, and Eagle’s Club.
Martinus was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Martha in 2010; granddaughter, Alison Cady; brothers, Vincent, Leon, and John; and sister, Violet Wroubel.
He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Stuart and husband Jack of Dodge City, Carol Gengler and husband Mike of Salina, Martina Stover and husband Scott of Beloit, Karen Eis and husband Thomas of Raymore, Missouri, Kathy Gilbert of Mission, Kansas, and Theresa Cady and husband Jeff of Marion; brothers, Joseph Jr. of Corpus Cristi, Texas and Norbert of Beloit; sisters, Dorothy Spaw of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Mary Lynn Rowley and husband Max of Poteau, Oklahoma; 14 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren with one on the way; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Saturday, November 9 at the St. John’s Catholic Church. A rosary service will be held at 7 PM Friday, November 8 at the Church, & visitation will be from 4 PM until the Rosary Service begins at the Church. Memorials may be given to the St. John’s Schools or VFW Post #6242. Roberts Family Funeral Services, Beloit, is in charge of arrangements.
