Beloit boys capture first game win over Ellsworth
BELOIT – The Beloit Trojan boys were hosts to Ellsworth on Tuesday as the only games played and will now hosts Minneapolis on Friday with both the boys and girls competing.
Beloit picked up their first win of the season over the Bearcats after a back and forth tie changing game led them to the win at the end for a 1-2 record going into Friday's game against the 6-1 Lions.
Three ties in the opening ended with the Trojans on top by two at the end of the first quarter and a nine point lead at halftime, after Wyatt Broeckelman landed four triples and Caleb Burks three.
"Wyatt played a tremendous game at both ends of the floor. He shot the ball extremely well," said Coach Ryan Eilert. "Caleb continues to be our consistent scorer. Him and Wyatt carried us in the first half."
Burks started the game at the line for the 1-0 lead before senior 6' 5" Bearcat, Braden Schulte answered with a triple for the Ellsworth 3-1 lead. Bryce Beisner made good on the inside shot for the first tie of the contest, 3-3 at the 6:50 mark.
Burks and Schulte exchanged triples for the 6-6 tie at the 6:11 mark but Ellsworth then took on a 6-0 run. Schulte landed another triple and freshman Will Cravens made the inside shot for the Bearcat 11-6 lead with 5:20 on the clock.
Wyatt Broeckelman and Craven exchanged the next two shots for the 13-8 Ellsworth lead at the 4:28 mark.
Burks grabbed the rebound and drove to the bucket drawing the foul for the two free shots and the start of a Trojan 7-0 run at the 3:39 mark. Owen Eilert made an inside shot and Brockelman connected on another triple to give Beloit the lead, 15-13 with 2:15 showing.
Freshman Wyatt Pelzel landed his inside shot to tie up the game once again at the 1:42 mark but Broeckelman landed back to back triples for Beloit's 20-15 lead with just 60 seconds on the clock.
Freshman Lane Rolfs added a trey for Ellsworth as time ran out and Beloit led by two, 20-18 at the end of the quarter.
Beloit scored 14-7 over Ellsworth in the second quarter adding another four triples to the board.
Junior Trey Anderson tied up the game for the Bearcats at the 7:11 mark before Burks drove to the bucket for Beloit's next two points and the 22-20 lead at the 6:50 mark.
Anderson landed a triple to pull Ellsworth back with one point 23-22 with 6:27 on the clock but Beisner grabbed the rebounds and landed one of his own to keep Beloit's 25-23 lead.
Sophomore Cade Gwinner tied up the game at 25-25 for Ellsworth at the 3:43 mark before Beloit took on a strong 9-0. Broeckelman added another two triples and Burks made the steal followed by a trey to extend Beloit's lead 34- 25, ending the first half.
After Beloit built up a nine point lead, Ellsworth dominated the third quarter outscoring the Trojans 20-9.
Both teams were exchanging missed shots and the Bearcats didn't score until the 5:59 mark as Anderson took on a solo 6-0 run for Ellsworth to close the gap 34- 31.
Broeckelman scored another key triple but was answered by Cravens for the 37-34 score at the 3:35 mark.
Broeckelman landed his sixth triple of the game and was answered by Schulte's jump shot for the Trojan two point 40-38 lead with 2:46 on the clock. Broeckelman was sent to the line for an added bonus point and was answered by Schulte on the next three point play to tie up the game once again 41-41 with 1:07 showing.
Anderson took on a layup to pull Ellsworth back into the lead with just :25 seconds remaining 43-41 but Owen Eilert walked to the line for an added two free shots for the 43-43 tie.
With just 5.4 seconds remaining, Cravens landed a shot for the 45-43 Bearcat lead to end the quarter.
Beloit settled down and outscored the Bearcats in the final quarter 19-9 for the win as Owen Eilert shot a perfect 8- 8 at the free throw line.
Beisner opened up with the first score on an inside shot to tie up the game at 45-45 at the 5:41 mark. Anderson was sent to the line for two added free shots to take the Ellsworth two point lead but Quinn Eilert stepped behind the paint for a key triple and Beloit's regained lead 48-47 at the 3:57 mark.
Cravens captured the lead for Ellsworth on the inside shot and and Anderson added two free shots for the 51-48 Bearcat lead with 2:59 on the clock.
That is where the buck stopped as Beloit took on the huge 14-0 run for the 62-51 win.
Owen Eilert was sent to the line for a perfect 8-8 free shots and and added two field goals. Burks landed his jump shot and Beloit defeated Ellsworth for their first win of the season.
"Owen was big down the stretch, getting a couple of late buckets and then going 8 for 8 from the free throw line in the last minute and a half," Coach Eilert said. "Hopefully getting a win can build some confidence for us and we can continue to improve."
Leading Beloit was Wyatt Broeckelman scoring 23 points off six 3FG, two 2FG and one FT with 1 rebound, 1 assist and 2 steals, followed by Caleb Burks 16 points off three 3FG, two 2FG and three FT with 3 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals and Owen Eilert 16 points off three 2FG and shooting a perfect 10-10 from the line along with 7 rebounds, 1 assists, 2 steals. Bryce Beisner scored 4 points with 4 rebounds; Quinn Eilert 3 points with 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal; Logan Arasmith 1 steal; Jackson Rexroat 1 assist; Noah Gerstner 1 assist; Maddox Waters 6 rebounds.
Leading scorers for Ellsworth were Braden Schulte with 19 points; Trey Anderson 17; Will Cravens 9; Lane Rolfs 5; Cade Gwinner and Riley Stone 2 points each.
