Beloit boys hold for the Sacred Heard win
BELOIT – TheBeloit Trojan boys played against theSacred Heart Knights on Thursday, and upped their season at 12-1. Sacred Heart fall to 9-3. Beloit will now compete on Tuesday when they hosts Republic County in Beloit.
"It was another great team win," said Beloit Coach Ryan Eilert. "Guys continue to take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves. I felt like our defense continues to keep us in games even when we maybe aren't shooting the ball all that well."
Carson Coxopened the first quarter for the Beloit 2-0 lead. He followed with a field goal and Bryce Mason landed his two point shot for the 6-0 run at the 2:34 mark and the 6-6 tie. Both teams traded baskets and the lead changed several times in the quarter as Vincent Palen continued to score on a two pointer. Cox ended the scoring for Beloit from behind the arc with his signature shot for an added three points as time ran out and Beloit led with a four point lead at 16-12.
The Sacred Heart Knights opened the second quarter for the first two point play. Palen added a free throw and Braxton Eilert landed a three pointer for the 20-16 lead at the 4:02 mark. Mason added a field goal and Hudson Smith connected on a two point basket. Palen landed a trey and at the endof the first half Beloit extended their lead 27-20.
Colin Chandler started off the third quarter with a two point field goal and Cox connected on a three point shot at the 6:28 mark. Beloit led at nine points, 32-23. Smith was sent to the line for a free shot and Palen added a field goal. Hudson Gray teamed up with Mason for the two point plays and the Trojans held to a three point lead, 39-36.
Palen opened the final quarter with a field goal in the fourth quarter before Cox followed with his fourth three point shot in the game. At the 5:18 mark, the Trojans led 44-40.
Sacred Heart retaliated to tie up the game at 44-44 before Smith landed a three pointer that gave the Trojans the lead 47-44with 3:38 showing. A pass from Masonto Hayden Budke accounted for an added two points. Mason followed up with a field goal and with 2:24 remaining, Beloit held the lead by four 51-47. Palen scored the next seven points for theTrojans at the free throw line and Beloit held on for the 58-51 win.
"Carson got us going in the first quarter and played really well," said Eilert. "Vincent did a great job of closing the game out by taking care of the ball and knocking down free throws in the forth."
Leading Beloit in scoring was Vincent Palen in the double digits at 19 points shooting 10-12 on free throws followed by Carson Cox with 16 points off four treys and two field goals. Bryce Mason scored 8 points; Hudson Smith 6; Braxton Eilert 3; Hudson Gray, Hayden Budke and Colin Chandler 2 points each.
Vincent Palen was named the KVSV Salina Ortho Player of the Game and Bryce Mason was named H&R Block of the Game.
