Beloit ladies fall short in the end to SES 40-38
BELOIT – Beloit ladies were host to Southeast of Saline on Tuesday and fall to 10-6 overall on the season. Both teams came into the game 7-1 on the season in league play. Beloit will now travel to play Russell on Friday before their last home game with Sacred Heart on parents night, Tuesday, Feb. 18.
"Both teams played extremely hard all game.," said Beloit Coach Shauna Remus. "We struggled with turnovers, which limited our possessions on the offensive end. Our defense was good but we just missed to many shots down the road to seal the win. We need to bounce back quickly and get a big road win on Friday at Russell."
Beloit ladies outscored 10-8 in the first quarter and 15-12 in the second quarter for the close 25-20 first half lead. Southeast came back to outscore 11-6 in the third quarter and both teams scored evenly in the fourth quarter 9-9 as Beloit fell short 40-38.
Both teams traded missed triples at the start of the first quarter before Porsche Cooper was sent to the line for the first two free shots at the 6:18 mark and the 2-0 lead. Southeast of Saline's senior, Keely Orr, in exchange, made the two bonus points on the other end to tie up the game at 2-2 at the 5:55 mark.
Shea Larson landed her first long shot and Cooper executed a blocked shot for the Lady Trojan's possession but a scoring play would not transpire. Karsyn Schlesener drove to the bucket off her own rebound for the next 4-4 tie before Jess Meier was sent to the line for Beloit. At the 3:34 mark, her two added points led the ladies on the 6-4 lead.
Cooper scored the next inside putback and Schlesener landed two of her own for the 8-6 Beloit lead at the 2:20 mark.
Larson landed her second long two point shot and Meredith Tillberg answered to keep the game at a two point margin 10-8 for Beloit's lead at the end of the quarter.
Schlesener opened the bucket at the start of the second quarter to tie up the game for the third time, 10-10, but Lorna Ehlers connected on her shot to up the 12-10 Beloit lead. Schlesener would not go away as she landed a shot to tie up the game once again at 12-12 at the 6:28 mark.
Meier and Larson teamed up on the next 6-0 run on back to back triples to extend Beloit's lead to 18-12. Reagan Eilert was sent to the line for an added bonus point for Beloit but Alaina Yianakopulos answered with the inside two to close in on Beloit's 19-14 lead at the 4:10 mark.
Trista Boeve pulled down another defensive rebound for Beloit's possession and Cooper followed with the inside jump shot for the 21-14 lead. Larson then added the two point shot and Schlesener answered with two of her own to close the gap, 23-16.
Madison Fear added a bonus point for Southeast and Larson landed the turn around jump shot, but Tillberg landed a key triple at the buzzer to keep Southeast within distance, 25-20 at the end of the first half.
Larson opened the third quarter with a nice block for Beloit's possession and Cooper fought for the offensive rebound to keep the ball on their end but a play would not transpire. Schlesener added her 14th point on a two point shot and stole the ball for the solo 4-0 run to pull Southeast back within one 25-24.
Caleigh Hewitt hit her first outside shot to widen the gap and Larson was sent to the line for a free shot as Beloit led 28-24 at the 3:30 mark.
Southeast landed another bonus point and Beloit committed their tenth turnover as the Trojans of purple and white took advantage as Schlesener landed a triple for the 28-28 tie.
Reagan Eilert retaliated with the next triple to regain the 31-28 lead for Beloit but Fear added her shots for the 31-31 tie to end the quarter.
Meier hit the jump shot to open the fourth quarter for the 33-31 lead but Beloit was quickly answered by Schlesener on her next added shot for the tie.
Boeve then answered with the next key two point shot and Larson regained possession off the defensive rebound for the 35-33 at the 6:34 mark.
Tillberg made the next move with a drive to the bucket for a trip at the line and an added bonus point to pull Southeast back within one, 35-34 at the 5:40 mark. Eilert scored on the next inside shot for Beloit's 37-34 lead with 5:11 showing.
Schlesener scored on her 19th point for the the 37-36 Southeast trail. Larson was sent to the line for a added bonus point at the 3:58 mark before Southeast added the shot for the 38-38 tie.
Both teams exchanged turnovers as the clock was running down before Southeast grabbed the loose ball and was sent to the line and failed for a chance to take the lead at the 1:43 mark. Both teams once again committed the turnovers with missed trips to the bucket and with :55 seconds remaining Beloit placed a stall but Schlesener made the steal for the layup and at the :11 second mark, Southeast took their first lead of the whole game at 40-38. With just :02 seconds on the clock, Beloit regained possession for the last failed attempt as Southeast of Saline defeated Beloit 40-38.
Leading Beloit on the boards was Shea Larson scoring 13 points with 4 rebounds and 6 blocks. Jess Meier scored 7 points with 6 rebounds and 8 assists; Porsche Cooper 6 points, 7 rebounds; Reagan Eilert 6 points; Lorna Ehlers, Caleigh Hewitt and Trista Boeve 2 points each.
