Beloit ladies hold for the SES 62-57 win
SALINA – The Beloit Lady Trojans took on the Southeast Saline Lady Trojans on Tuesday to up their season record 11-5. Southeast Saline fall to 9-6.
"The girls came out focused and got into a rhythm offensively," said Beloit's Head Coach Shauna Remus. "We had a defensive scheme we had been working on in practice to stop Southeast's inside game and the girls ran our defense to perfection the first half which allowed us to take a double digit lead going into half time."
Beloit won the tip-off as Sydney Barrett scored the first two points of the game. Barrett followed with a walk to the free throw line for an added two. Jessica Meier landed a two point shot and the Beloit Lady Trojans lead 6-2 at the 5:00 mark.
Southeast Saline managed to score the next eight straight points, but not before Barrett stepped behind the paint for her first trey at the 2:37 mark.
Saline Lady Trojans took on the lead by one at 10-9 before Beloit retaliated on an eight point run with Breezy Schoeder scoring the next six pointsfor the Lady Trojans. Meier followed with two of her own. Schroeder executed a nice steal on the next play and Shea Larsonended the play with her first two points to help regain Beloit's lead at the end of the first quarter 19-10.
Larson opened the second quarter on a field goal for the Lady Trojans. Porsche Cooper pulled down the offensive rebound and Larson connected on a three point shot to extend Beloit's lead 26-14 at the 5:20 mark. Cooper scored her first point in the game from the free throw line and Larson added two free throws of her own for the Lady Trojans with just under two minutes remaining, Beloit leading by eleven, 31-20. Larson and Cooper both connected on field goals as the last points scored for the Lady Trojans lead, 35-22.
"We knew Southeast would make a run going into the fourth quarter but we calmly hit free throws to close out the game and get a huge win on the road against a good team," said Remus. Super proud of the poise and confidence the girls showed to get the win."
Southeast Saline started thesecond half with a trey before Larson added the next four points for Beloit at the 5:25 mark, Beloit 39-27 lead. Larson and Meier combined for the next seven points for the Lady Trojans but Southeast Saline retaliated on a ten point run to come back within seven 46-39.
Meier connectedon a two point basket for the Beloit's first points in the fourth quarter and added the next four points from the free throw line and with 3:17 showing and the Lady Trojans 52-49 lead. Barrett,Cooper,and Schroeder added points from the charity stripe for Beloit the kept the Lady Trojans in the lead late in the quarter for the 62-57 win.
Leading Beloit in double digit scoring was Jess Meier with 17 points followed by Larson scoring 16 and Sydney Barrett 14 points. Breezy Schroeder scored 8 points; Porsche Cooper 7.
Beloit will now host Russell tonight (Friday) during their Homecoming match up.
