Beloit ladies win over Lady Bearcats
BELOIT – The Beloit girls upped their season to 10-5 on the season after their sixth straight win over Ellsworth on Friday during homecoming celebrations. The Lady Trojans will now host Southeast of Saline on Tuesday before traveling to take on Russell for the second time this season.
Beloit's last home game will be on Feb. 18 against Sacred Heart during Parents Night.
"This was a great team win as everyone who played had an impact," said Beloit Coach Shauna Remus. "The girls played great defense holding Ellsworth to less than 10 points each quarter. We need to keep improving as we continue through league play and look forward to Substate."
Against Ellsworth, both teams came out sluggish with several turnovers and missed shots until senior Shea Larson opened with the first triple at the 5:15 mark of the first quarter for Beloit's 3-0 lead. Ellsworth answered with a two point shot to stay within one point before Porsche Cooper landed one of her own for the 5-2 Beloit lead at the 4:01 mark.
The Lady Bearcats were sent to the line to tie up the game at the 3:12 mark but senior Lorna Ehlers connected on her two points to take the 7-5 Trojan lead with 2:04 on the clock. Jess Meier added her first point from the line and Larson landed her second triple to put the score at 11-5 at the 1:18 mark. Ellsworth then took on a 4-0 run to pull back within two points, ending the quarter with Beloit ahead 11-9.
Beloit held strong in the second quarter dominating the boards outscoring 17-8.
Ehlers executed the rebound and Cooper drew the foul for the first two points from the charity stripe and the start of a 6-0 run for Beloit. Larson scored on a putback and Caleigh Hewitt drove to the bucket for two and the Lady Trojans 17-11 lead at the 5:23 mark.
Larson exchanged a triple with a Jaide Talbott Lady Bearcat two point shot for the 20-15 lead at the 2:35 mark. Larson then landed the inside shot and and Meier drove to the bucket to up the lead 24-15. Talbott was allowed the last two points for the Lady Bearcats as Beloit was sent to the line shooting a perfect 4-4 from Meier and Larson for the first half lead of 28-17.
The Lady Trojans continued to lead on the boards in the second half outscoring a repeating 12-7 in the last two quarters.
Cooper quickly opened the third quarter with the inside shot and Meier landed a triple. Larson was sent to the line for a pair of free throws and Meier hit an inside jump shot and landed the last triple score at the end for the Beloit 40-24 quarter lead.
Trista Boeve landed a free shot at the start of the fourth quarter and Meier made a key steal ending with the layup for the Beoit 43-24 lead at the 5:56 mark.
Meier added two free shots, Larson an inside shot and Sierra Shamburg a free throw to extend the lead 4828 at the 3:20 mark. Maddison File landed an inside shot and Shamburg scored the last two points for the Beloit win over Ellsworth 52-31.
Leading Beloit on the boards was Shea Larson scoring 19 points with 6 rebounds and 4 blocks followed by Jessica Meier with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals. Porsche Cooper scored 6 points with 3 rebounds, 3 blocks; Sierra Shamburg 3 points; Maddison File, Caleigh Hewitt, and Lorna Ehlers 2 points each. Trista Boeve contributed 1 point.
