Blujay Cross Country finish on top
LEONARDVILLE – The St. John's Blujays Cross Country teams travelled to Leonardville on Saturday, Oct. 12 for the Riley County Cross Country Invitational. Other schools in attendance included Axtell, Centralia, Clifton-Clyde, Cornerstone (Topeka), Council Grove, Flinthills Christian, Frankfort, Fredonia, Herington, Pike Valley, Rock Creek, Riley County, Royal Valley, Sacred Heart, Southeast of Saline, Valley Heights, Wabaunsee.
“The temperatures were unseasonably warm for October,” said coach Ben Letourneau. “Last year at the same meet it was 40 degrees; this year it was 80. Our boys and girls still had great races, despite the warmer weather. Riley County is one of the bigger meets we go to. This year there were 90 girls and 101 boys in the varsity races.”
The girls were led by Jane Letourneau with a 6th place finish and a time of 21:48. Gemma Clark was 44th and Emma Mick was 70th.
Once again, the Blujay boys were led by Caleb Eilert with a 2nd place finish in 17:03 followed by Andy Prather in 71st. “Caleb had some great competition today,” said Letourneau. “Kodi Downes from Council Grove ended up the winner, but he, Caleb, and Luke Gleason of Southeast of Saline ran as a group from the beginning. Caleb was able to pass and hold off Gleason in the last 200 meters, but ended up 11 seconds behind Downes. I’m very pleased with how everyone ran. There were a lot of teams at Riley County that will be at our Regional in a couple of weeks, so it was good to see how we line up against them.”
The Blujays will travel to Downs on Thursday for the Lakeside Invitational and League Meet.
