Treaster claims National Wrestling championship
WISCONSIN DELLS, Wisconsin – Newton Wrestler Nick Treaster claimed a national championship and a runner-up medal at the USA Wrestling National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championship in Wisconsin Dells.
Treaster won the national freestyle title by winning five straight matches and took second in Greco-Roman winning four straight before losing in the finals. In the freestyle championships, he defeated Alexander Basken of Wisconsin 10-0, Jameson Garcia of Illinois 11-0, and Nicholas Jones of Pennsylvania in the quarterfinals 12-1. In the semifinals, Treaster came from behind to pin Ayson Rice of South Dakota. In the finals, Treaster downed National Champion Nathanael Jesuroga of Iowa, 6-4. in the championship match, Treaster was on the bad side of the tie-breaking criteria as the match was locked at 4 points each. With 20 seconds remaining, Treaster scored a late takedown and held on for the win.
In the Greco-Roman championships, Treaster downed Sid Tidlsey of Masssachussetts 12-0, Aliaksandr Kikiniou of New York 8-6, Marcello Milani of Michigan 10-6, and Cory Velasquez of Oklahoma 8-3 in the semifinals. In the finals, Treaster fell to Rice 13-6. Treaster competed in the 14U division at 97 pounds.
Earlier this season, Treaster won the USA Wrestling National Folkstyle Tournament. He also won the Southern Plains regional titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, and Kansas state titles in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman. He finished the season with a record of 80-3.
Nick will be a freshman at Newton High School this fall, joining his older brother Grant, a two-time high school state champion. Brother Logan Treaster, a junior next season, competes for the U.S. Naval Academy at 125 pounds. Nick is the grandson of Arden, and the late Sharon Treaster, of rural Beloit.
