St. John’ s/Tipton Blujays defeat the Bombers

The St. John’s/Tipton Blujays stayed home to take on Wakefield in a non-district game which would give the Blujays a final tune-up before the playoffs. The Blujays entered the ball game with a 52 record versus the Wakefield Bombers 1-6 record. The Blujays would hand the Bombers their 7th straight loss of the season as they defeated the Bombers 42-8. The game would not have any playoff implications as the Blujays locked up the 2nd seed in the district. Due to a mistake by the score tracking website MaxPreps, Thunder Ridge was listed as the district leader, but in fact they are no longer in the same district as the Blujays. The 2nd seed was important for the St. John’s/Tipton team because they will get a home playoff game and also have a more manageable game against a 3rd seed from District 3. The Blujays received the opening kickoff but were unable to move the ball as they turned the ball over on 4 downs. The Bombers would make the Blujays pay as they ran a screen in for a TD. After a successful conversion attempt the Bombers took an early 8-0 lead. The Blujays would have a chance to make up for their first series. With incredible blocking by senior Jack Hartman, Chance Jermark was able to get some substantial gains with his explosive speed through the holes. Unfortunately a poorly timed penalty halted their progress and they again turned the ball over on downs deep in Bomber territory. The Bombers would chew up clock time and after 1 period of play they lead the Blujays 8-0 After Chance Jermark forced a punt with a great sack the Blujays will now be able to push the ball. Tyson Gates received the punt and ran back a long run only to be negated by a blocking penalty. The Blujays would make the needed adjustments as Luke Bates would execute a great block to allow Gates to slice his way into the endzone. With a missed conversion run the Blujays trailed the Bombers 6-- 8. On the following possession by the Bombers they started shoving the ball down the field. Gates was able to leap high in the air and come up with an interception to give the Blujays the ball back with the momentum. They sent the crowd into a frenzy as Gates launched a bomb to Daniel Eilert who pulled down the ball and ran the remaining way for his first TD of the year. Gates would run the ball in for 2 extra points giving the Blujays a 148 lead. The Blujay defense stepped up their intensity as the Bombers took the ball. After Nick Greenwood nearly intercepted the ball the Blujays pushed the Bombers back to a 4th and more than 20 forcing a punt. After taking the ball from a punt the Blujays continued to struggle with penalties. A Gates TD was called back from illegal blocking as a result. The Bombers would make them pay as they intercepted the ball for a turnover. Bates would turn it up on defense as he made stop after stop on defense. The Blujays would get the ball back with less than 2 minutes remaining before half with 65 yards to go for a score. Gates would bust off a 30 yard run getting a large chunk back. Running the Wildcat formation Chance Jermark would take the snap and also get a good amount of yards for another 1st down. Jermark would take it in following that play for another nice blast through the line with some nice blocking. The conversion pass was missed which gave the Blujays a 20-8 lead going into halftime.
