Beloit ladies fly past Hoisington Cardinals

The Beloit Lady Trojans defeated the Hoisington Lady Cardinals, 59-41, Friday, January 10, after a 23-point second quarter that shifted the game’s momentum.

With its second consecutive win, Beloit improves to 4-3. The Lady Trojans, who were 2-2 in the NCAA, were scheduled to travel to Ellsworth Tuesday, January 14. The Lady Bearcats were 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Freshman Landry Litton made two free throws to give Beloit an early 2-0 lead. Marley Bittel answered with a three-pointer to put Hoisington ahead, 3-2.

Two more treys pushed the lead to 9-2, prompting a Beloit timeout. Junior Autumn Lorenz’s three cut the gap to 9-5 before senior Cassandra Thompson’s bucket pulled the hosts within two.

Bittel responded with a basket. Late in the first quarter, sophomore Reagan Cheney added a bucket before Bittel closed the frame with the visitors’ fourth trey in the contest.

Hoisington led, 14-9, going to the second. Cheney’s basket early in the quarter was answered by Tianna Lutters’ three that increased the edge to 17-11.

Later in the second, Thompson’s bucket started Beloit’s offensive turnaround that culminated in an 18-point lead in the third quarter. She added two more baskets to even the score at 17.

After a timeout, senior Addison Budke’s free throw put the hosts ahead. She later made a pair of free throws to give Beloit a 20-18 advantage.

After a Hoisington basket evened the score, Thompson and Budke each added a bucket before sophomore Samantha Thompson’s trey pushed the lead to 27-20.

The Lady Trojans scored five of the last nine points in the second to lead, 32-24, at the half.

Hoisington opened the third quarter with four of the first six points before Budke’s basket started the run that put Beloit in command.

Cassandra Thompson scored seven of the next 10 points as the 12-0 run pushed the edge to 46-28.  After Ellie Crawford’s two baskets, Thompson added one as the quarter ended. The hosts led, 48-32, headed to the fourth.

Cheney’s bucket early in the final frame increased the lead to 50-32. Each team added nine points to close the contest.

Beloit Head Coach Kresin said he is extremely proud of his players.

“We’re getting better,” he said. “I like where we’re at right now.”

Cassandra Thompson led Beloit in double digits scoring 23 points followed by Addison Budke scoring 18 points. Reagan Cheney scored 6 points; Samantha Thompson and Autumn Lorenz 5 points each; Landry Litton 2 points.
