The Beloit Trojans defeated the Hoisington Cardinals, 43-30, Friday, January 10, after overcoming a slow start.

With its fifth consecutive win, Beloit improves to 5-2. The Trojans, who were 4-0 in the NCAA,  were scheduled to travel to Ellsworth Tuesday, January 14. The Bearcats were 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Hoisington’s offense methodically moved the ball in a low-scoring opening quarter. Three and a half minutes into the contest, .Jason Robinson made a shot to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead

Later in the first, Robinson added another basket before Mason Martin’s three-pointer. Senior Eli Johnson’s bucket near the end of the quarter cut the deficit to 7-2 headed to the second.

The Cardinals opened the second frame with two more baskets before junior Brody Litton’s bucket narrowed the gap to 11-4. Two more buckets by the visitors pushed the edge to 15-4 before sophomore Hudson Remus’ three-point play.

A Hoisington trey was followed by three free throws by Johnson to close the half. The Cardinals led, 18-10, at intermission.

Johnson opened the third quarter with two more free throws before a Hoisington three. Junior Luke Cheney started the contest’s key momentum shift with a trey that cut the gap to 21-15.

Each team added two buckets before junior Kale Leners and Johnson each added a basket to narrow the deficit to 25-23. Following a timeout, junior Charlie Burke’s trey gave Beloit a brief lead.

After the Cardinals regained the lead with a basket, Burke made another trey to give Trojans a 29-27 edge going to the fourth.

Beloit opened the final frame with the first nine points, including two baskets by Jackson Cheney, to complete a 12-0 run. After a Rhen Galla bucket cut the lead to 38-29, the Trojans closed the win with four of the final five points. Beloit Head Coach Ryan Eilert said he was pleased with how his team bounced back from a slow start. He said the Cardinals deserved a lot of credit for how they limited Beloit’s offense most of the contest.

Eli Johnson led Beloit on the boards with 13 points. Charlie Burke 6 points; Luke Cheney, Jackson Cheney and Hudson Remus 5 points each; Brody Litton 4 points; Ryker Clark 3; Kyler Leners 2.
