MCHHS launches Robotic Assisted Surgery

Posted

BELOIT  – Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems (MCHHS) is excited to announce the implementation of the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system in Beloit. This advanced technology allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with greater precision, flexibility, and control, enhancing the level of care available to patients. MCHHS will provide this additional option beginning in January 2025, so that you and your surgeon may select the surgical method that is best for you. Whether it is robotic, laparoscopic or traditional surgery, MCHHS can meet your needs right here close to home.

Surgical robotics provides numerous advantages for both patient and surgeon, making it one of the most frequently used surgical techniques today. Reasons for its popularity include enhanced accuracy, minimally invasive techniques, and improved outcomes.

For patients, robotic surgery offers benefits including less postoperative pain, faster recovery, minimal scarring, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications, such as the risk of blood loss, blood clots and infection. Recovery from a robotic procedure generally takes 2-3 weeks compared to 4-6 weeks for traditional open surgery, allowing you to get back to your everyday life safer and faster.

Having utilized robotics in prior roles, Dr. Banker and Dr. Owens have been eager advocates of bringing this service to MCHHS. As trained robotic surgeons, they will be in the operating room and in complete control of every movement of the robotic instrument. Robotics provides the surgeon with greater visibility by magnifying the area up to ten times, and allows the surgeon to deliver steady, exact maneuvers. MCHHS surgeons are prepared to address multiple surgical needs with the use of the da Vinci robot, including hernia repair, gallbladder removal, appendix removal, and colorectal surgery.

“We are extremely proud to bring surgical robotics to our patients, a unique capability not often available for small hospitals, yet used now in almost every larger health setting” said Janelle Kircher, CEO of MCHHS. “Not only does it offer patients faster recovery with less pain, but it also allows our surgical team to perform complex procedures that would otherwise require patients to seek care in the big city. We are committed to our mission, increasing your access to high-quality care close to home, surrounded by the skilled and compassionate healthcare team you trust.”

The introduction of surgical robotics at MCHHS is especially significant for rural areas, where access to advanced medical technology is often limited. The reduced downtime associated with robotic surgery translates into faster returns to activities of daily living, work, and family life. Patients frequently experience less anxiety and feel more empowered as they recover with fewer physical limitations. This combination of benefits has made robotic assisted surgery an increasingly preferred choice for many procedures. The first robotic assisted surgery is scheduled for January 6, 2025.
