Penny Wars at BES

Posted

BELOIT – The BES Student Leadership Team launched a spirited Penny War to support Mitchell County Relay for Life. From March 31 through April 4, grades battled it out, aiming to collect the most pennies and be crowned school champions.

While pennies and bills added to a grade’s total, the real twist came with silver coins. Nickels, dimes and quarters acted as sabotage - each subtracting from a grade’s total. Students were strategizing to protect their jars and subtract points from other grades’ jars. By the end of the week, students and staff raised $2,000 for a great cause.

Third grade emerged as the school winner and was rewarded with a pizza party. Because every student played a part in the fundraiser’s success, the entire school got to celebrate with popsicles.

In addition to collecting coins, the student leadership team also invited students and staff to bring photos honoring loved ones who have battled cancer—both survivors and those who have lost the fight. These photos became part of a collage titled "Heroes." BES would like to thank everyone who contributed to this fundraiser for Mitchell County Relay for Life.

The Relay For Life event – put on by the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life – will be held from 2-10 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Beloit High School Track and Field. Local entertainment, bounce houses, a scavenger hunt, Fat Foxes Food Truck, Ice Bros snow cones hot dog meals and walking tacos and more will be available throughout the day. At 8 p.m., a luminary light up ceremony will be held in honor or in memory of loved ones. Luminaries will be sold at the SVED Director, Emily Benedick office.
