Doris Fromm, 93, Beloit

Doris A. Fromm,

BELOIT – Doris A. Fromm, age 93, entered her heavenly home on Friday, November 3, 2023, at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas. She was born on April 4, 1930, in Strong City, Kansas, to Robert and Opal Daniel Moffet. As a three-year-old, she was hit by a drunk driver, breaking both legs above the knee. A year later, she was afraid to walk, so her doctor thought the best cure was sending her to school. Since there was no Kindergarten, she was a four-year-old 1st grader in Cottonwood Falls.

She graduated from Chase County Community High School in 1947 at age 17 and attended business college in Kansas City, graduating before her 18th birthday. She was introduced to Kenneth Fromm by one of her teachers, Kenneth’ s cousin. After a short courtship, they were married on March 19, 1948. Their first daughter, Diana, was born the following February and Linda was born four years later.

As a couple, they lived in many Kansas communities while Ken was finishing his college degree at K-State and then beginning his career in K-State Extension work in McPherson, Dighton, Garden City, and Beloit. Doris easily made friends wherever they went.

Doris was a stay-at-home mom, homemaker, seamstress and wonderful cook. She served as office manager in two churches in Garden City. After moving to Beloit, she became a florist at Humfeld’ s Greenhouse. She later became a cottage supervisor at the Youth Center at Beloit for 23 years, where she made many lifelong friendships with coworkers. Doris was very active in her church, serving her God, His people & her community. In addition to her regular attendance at Sunday Services and supporting her husband in his Sunday School teaching, she was a member of the afternoon UMW, TLC coffee group, and attended Friendship Dinners. She made snacks, took meals, made pies or whatever was needed and was at the center of any activity at the church for as long as she was able. As a couple, they provided rides to church for friends who were no longer able to drive.

Doris had the gift of hospitality, hosting bridge and family holiday gatherings. Christmas was her favorite! Doris was a devoted mother, grandma, and great-grandma. She supported each one of her family members in whatever endeavor they had and she was their best customer. She loved attending school events, performances, and sporting events to lend her support. When she was no longer able to attend, she wanted to know all the details.

In these last years at Hilltop Lodge, she was attentive in the dining hall, making sure everyone had what they needed. She loved her fellow residents and the staff, who lovingly cared for her.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; parents, Robert and Helen Moffet, Opal and Jack Pendergraft; her brother, Donald Moffet; and son-inlaw, Joe Wendell. She is survived by her daughters, Diana Wendell of Hutchinson, Kansas; Linda Harris and husband, Norm of Powell, Ohio; 5 grandchildren: Jeremy (Jen) Wendell, Kelly (T.J.) Ulmer, Adrienne (Scott) Felts, Holly (Jim) Thomas, Drew Harris and 12 great grandchildren: Grayson (Lindsey) Wendell; Hailey Wendell; Brendan, Aidan, and Kaylan Ulmer; James, Jacob and Autumn Thomas; Melina, Jude, Micah, and Levi Felts; and 3 great-great grandchildren: Ryker, Hadleigh, and Brayden Wendell. Funeral services will be at 1:00 Monday, November 13 at the Beloit Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1-7 PM with family present from 5-7 PM at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Church or the American Stroke Association.
