Helen LaVonne Van Amburg

HUTCHINSON – Helen LaVonne Van Amburg, 89, died peacefully December 17, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village. She was born September 23, 1933, in Atwood, KS, to Clarence and Berniece (McClaury) Young.

Helen graduated from Beloit High School in 1952.

She retired as manager for Motel 6 in Hays.

On May 22, 1955, she married Leslie Eugene “ Gene” Van Amburg. He died January 9, 2021, after they shared over 66 years of marriage.

Helen is survived by: daughters, Karen Heller of Hutchinson and Carol Sommers (Allon) of Manhattan; grandchildren, Steven Heller of Hutchinson, Robyn Bonner (Bo) of Des Moines, IA, Lainen Bayer (Jake) and Joseth Sommers, all of Manhattan; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson (due May 2023).

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Elizabeth Young.

Private graveside service is planned at Round Springs Cemetery, Hunter, KS. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2022, with the family present from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village or Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
