Wheat Harvest!

Wheat Harvest!

The Eilert family cut short wheat seen in Mitchell County during the 2023 Wheat Harvest, south of Beloit off No. 9 Highway on Thursday. After 50 years of harvest, some combines are sitting inside the shed, due to the extreme drought conditions, using wheat as feed instead of harvesting. The drought continues with rain forecast for today (Monday) night at 20 percent and on Tuesday at 30 percent for a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Wednesday is forecast as sunny and hot with a high near 98 degrees and extends into Thursday with a 50 percent chance of rain at night. Another 30 percent chance is forecast for Friday with a high near 90 degrees and a 20 percent chance on Saturday with a high near 85 degrees. Sunday is forecast for sunny with a high near 88 degrees. For some areas in Kansas, rain has delayed harvest, while others have received moisture just in time to fill grain heads. According to Delphos Coop Association, only four or five producers are cutting near Delphos in Ottawa County, and are reporting 10-20 bushels per acre with fairly poor test weights, but protein is averaging 15 percent and no dockage. The Central Valley Ag Elevator in Beloit, is reporting an average of 20-22 bushel per acre, with harvest winding down. Variability in wheat crop reflects the timing of moisture this season, giving off sporadic reports, Delphos and other area elevators are reporting around half their normal amount of bushels this year, with most on their way to flour mills in the Kansas City area.
