Lawrence grew up on his family farm. He was the eighth born of eleven children. He graduated from Tipton High School with the class of 1951. He enlisted in the Army on February 25th, 1955 serving in Germany as an ambulance driver. While serving in Germany, his younger brother, Mike, got married and mailed him a piece of the wedding cake. He returned home on Christmas Eve and was honorably discharged on January 2nd, 1957. He worked a year in Riverside, California for the Power and Light Company before returning home to farm. He met Elizabeth Jean Schroeder (Jean) at the weekly town dance. They married on April 20th, 1960 at the St. Boniface Catholic Church and had been married for nearly 60 years. They began their married life on a farm South West of Tipton and together were blessed with three children.
Lawrence was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #1645, 3rd degree and a Charter member of Senator Robert F. He had fun hunting pheasants with the guys. One of his greatest passions was farming and caring for his cattle, which led him to sales and service of Harvestore equipment. Lawrence and Jean built a home in Salina, Kansas so he could continue this business. He took pride in his work and making sure his customers were satisfied. His knowledge, quick-wit, and hard-work led to a successful business. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their activities.
