Beloit advance to State championship over Lecompton

Palen leads Trojan team scoring with 21 points

HUTCHINSON – The Beloit Trojans faced the Perry-Lecompton Kaws on Friday in the semi-final game of the 3A State Tournament. The Trojans upped their season to 24-1 with their win and advanced into the Championship game with Girard on Saturday.

Beloit dominated the first quarter play scoring 18-8. Both teams scored evenly at 10-10 in the second quarter but Beloit held the 28-13 first half lead.

"We got off to a great start shooting the ball and able to jump on them early," said Beloit Coach Ryan Eilert. "Our defense the first three quarters was tremendous. It wasn't until the fourth that they were able to get much going."

The Trojans scored the first five points of the ball game as Colin Chandler landed a field goal and Vincent Palen a three pointer that gave Beloit the lead 5-0. Hudson Smith connected on a treyfollowed up by a another two point basket by Chandler and the Trojans were ahead 10-2. Carson Cox landed a three pointer and Palen added a free shot and a two point field goaland with 2:06 showing. Beloit held the lead by eleven 16-5. Hudson Gray connected on a two point basket and at the end of the first quarter Beloit had the lead by ten 18-8.

The Kawsscored the first four points of the second quarter that cut the Trojans lead down to six 18-12. Palen scored two more points from the free throw line before Gray was fouled andcompleted a three point play and at the 5:01 mark. Beloit was in the lead 23-14. Smith scored on a two point field goaland landed a three pointer for the last five points of the quarter for the Trojans. Beloit managed to keep the lead the entire first half of the ball game and when time ran out they were once again ahead by ten 28-18.

Tate Thompson connected on a two point basket for his first two points in the game for Beloit's first points of the second half. Palen landed a two pointer and the Trojans were ahead 32-20 before the Kaws scored the next four points in the quarter. Braxton Eilert landed a three pointer for Beloit and with 1:29 showing the Trojans held the lead 35-24. Smith passed the ball to Cox and he connected on a three point field goal for the Beloit 12 point lead 38-26.

Bryce Mason scored on a two point basket forthe first points of the fourth quarter. Palen landed a trey and at the 5:36 mark the Trojans had the 16 point lead 43-27. Cox added a point from the free throw line before Gray connected on a free throw and Smith added a field goal for the 14 point lead 47-33. Mason was fouled after he made a two point field goal and completed the three point play at the 2:29 mark for the 52-38 lead. Beloit's next ten points were also scored from the free throw line with two from Smith and eight by Palen. The Trojans won the ball game 62-53 and advanced to the 3AState Championship for the sixth time in the school's history.

Leading Beloit in double digit scoring was Vincent Palen with 21 points followed by Hudson Smith with 12. Carson Cox scored 9 points, Hudson Gray 6, Bryce Mason 5, Colin Chandler 4, Bryce Mason 3, Tate Thompson 2.
