Beloit boys advance to Sub-State semifinals Trojans win big over Eureka 60-39......

HUTCHINSON – The Beloit Trojans took on the Eureka Tornados in the first round of the 3A State Tournament on Thursday and up their season to 23-1 with advancement into the Semifinals tonight. Beloit will now face Perry-Lecompton (21-2) with a 4:45 p.m. tip-off.

"Defensively I felt like we frustrated Eureka throughout the game, especially in the 2nd half," said Beloit Coach Ryan Eilert.

Against Eureka, Beloit scored 10-13 in the opening quarter and 13-8 in the second quarter for the 23-21 first half lead.

Eureka scored the first four points of the ball game and took an early lead 4-0, before Vincent Palen landed a two pointer for the Trojans followed by a Carson Cox field goal. At the 5:21 mark Beloit was behind by two 6-4. Hudson Smith completed a three point play that gave the Trojans the lead 7-6 at the 4:42 mark. Tate Thompson added a two point shot and Smith added a free shot for Beloit. At the end of the first quarter Eureka was ahead by three 13-10.

Colin Chandler opened the second quarter with a field goal and Palen scored on a two point basket that gave the Trojans the lead by one 14-13. Cox landed a three pointer and with 3:04 showing, Beloit wasahead by two 17-15. Eureka scored on a couple of three pointers of their own before Braxton Eilert connected on a trey for the Trojans. Smith was fouled ashe attempted a three point basketanover Eureka when time ran out in the first half 23-21.

The Trojans dominated the third quarter scoring 22-7 and then 15-11 in the final quarter to coast in for the 60-39 win.

"We had an excellent third quarter that really was the separation for the game," Eilert said. "Tate was able to get a few baskets in the run and we Carson, Vinny, and Hayden all hit three's in that spell as well."

Thompson landed the first four points of the second half for Beloit followed up with a three point basket by Cox and the Trojans were up by eight 30-22. Palen and Budke both landed three pointers and Beloit had the lead by twelve 36-24. Thompson and Hudson Gray scored the next four points and with 1:37 remaining, the Trojans were ahead by sixteen 42-26. Budke added a free shot and scored on a two point field goal before the end of the third quarter giving Beloit the 45-26 lead.

Palen scored the first two points of the fourth quarter for the Trojans and at the 6:51 mark Beloit was ahead 47-28. Thompson added two more points in the quarter and Smith stole the ball for Beloit's possession. Cox landed a three point basket and with 4:56 showing, the Trojans held the lead 52-30. Budke connected on another shot and Smith made his way to the line for two free shots. With 2:09 remaining, Beloitwas in the lead 58-32. Trase McQueen landed a field goal as Beloit ended with a final score of 60-39 and advancement into the State compeition.

Leading Beloit in double figures was Carson Cox and Hudson Smith scoring 11 points followed by Tate Thompson and Hayden Budke with 10 points each. Vincent Palen scored 9 points; Braxton Eilert 3; Hudson Gray, Trase McQueen and Colin Chandler 2 points each.

Smith led the team on rebounds with 10; Thompson 8; Chandler 5; Budke 4; Cox and Hudson Gray 3; Bryce Mason 2; Palen, Kyler Vahle, Eilert, Trase McQueen, 1 apiece.

Smith stole the ball 4 times; Palen 3 and Cox 2. Cox, Gray and Mason all had 1 block apiece.

"I thought it was team effort. Hudson Smith continues to set the tone for us and the other guys continue to play within themselves and are always looking for the extra pass for their teammates," said Eilert.

"Perry Lecompton has a lot of size and is really long. Rebounding will be huge and making sure offensively we continue to share the ball will be keys."
