Beloit Trojan boys over Ellsworth 57-41
BELOIT – The Beloit boys are now 12-3 on the season after their Friday win over Ellsworth 57-41. They will now hosts Southeast of Saline on Tuesday in their second contest of the season. The Trojans of orange fell short to the Trojans of purple and white early in the season 69-66 in overtime play on the road.
Against Ellsworth, Beloit dominated the first quarter for the early 16-3 lead but both teams scored evenly in the second quarter at 13-13 for the Trojan 29-13 lead.
"I thought we played well at both ends of the floor," said Beloit Coach Ryan Eilert. "Our scoring was fairly balanced, which was good to see again, and I thought all our guys did a nice job defensively."
Beloit allowed Ellsworth the first triple score from Avery Haxton as the only score they would make throughout the remaining first quarter.
Meanwhile Bryce Mason opened for Beloit with the first inside shot and the start of the 16-0 run. Hudson Gray landed his two point shot for the 4-3 lead at the 5:30 mark. Carson Cox stepped behind the paint for his first signature triple score and Gray continued to hustle for the steal and pass inside to Mason for the 12-3 lead. Vincent Palen drove to the bucket for the next two points as the Trojans extended their lead 14-3 at the 1:25 mark and Cox scored the last two points from the line for the ending 16-3 first quarter lead.
Cox and Haxton opened the second quarter landing their second triples of the contest for the 19-6 score. Mason added an inside shot. Braden Shulte then went on a solo 6-0 run for Ellsworth to try and close the gap 21-12 at the 4:40 mark before Coach Eilert called a timeout for Beloit.
Palen reentered the floor with the first two points on the next Beloit 8-4 run as Gray, Cox and Mason all connected on two point shots for the ending 29-16 first half lead.
Beloit outscored 12-7 in the third quarter as Shulte landed the first two points for Ellsworth. Palen answered with his second triple for the 32-16 lead at the 5:32 mark. Gray landed his inside jump shot before the Bearcats were allowed five points for the 3421 score at the 3:35 mark.
Gray added another inside shot and Mason a putback and an inside shot at the 1:20 mark to extend Beloit's lead. Palen ended the quarter at the line for two free shots as Beloit led 41-23.
Ellsworth outscored 18-16 in the final quarter but Beloit held strong for the win.
Trey Anderson opened the fourth quarter with a triple before Cox and Palen combined for the next 6-0 on two triples and Beloit's 47-26 lead at the 5:56 mark.
Shulte and Cox exchanged triples on the following scoring plays as Cox scored his fourth in the game. Grant Arasmith added a two point shot for the 52-32 Beloit lead at the 3:00 mark.
Cox was sent to the line for three added free shots and Gray scored the last inside shot as Beloit defeated Ellsworth 57-41. Leading Beloit on the boards was Carson Cox with 19 points with 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal; Vincent Palen 16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals; Hudson Gray 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals; Bryce Mason 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals. Grant Arasmith contributed 2 points 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals; Caleb Burks 2 rebounds; Kyler Vahle 3 rebounds.
