BELOIT - The team of Lucille Heller (Mitchell County Tourism), Julia Rabe (Beloit Area Chamber), in collaboration with the City of Beloit, submitted for and received a grant in the amount of $2,035 from the Solomon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) in spring of 2022 to update the signage for the Little Red School House. The grant specifically provided for two new billboards wraps with the City of Beloit transportation department building the sign frames after the old ones had collapsed, In addition the grant provided for five new informational signs about education in Mitchell County and Kansas as well as information about the large bell sitting on the property. The funds covered the new signs at the schoolhouse and the new billboards on entiy ways from east and west on Highway 24. The billboards use the new logo, Lil' Red as part of the advertising, The grant provided funding to commission a photo opportunity sign that was painted by local artist Kelsey Adams, this will provide memory making opportunities at this tourist destination. The site has received a number of enhancements over the last few years thanks to the journalistic efforts of Terry Bailey, financial contributions of the Jerry Boettcher family, city and county employee rehab efforts, signage from Bell Memorial, and numerous interactive and tourist efforts thanks to Heller, The information on the new signs at the schoolhouse came directly from the Prairie Schools book by Eloise Bean of Beloit and published by the Osborne Publishing Co., Osborne, Ks in 1997.
