After a Fire Weather Watch was issued for Tuesday, April 12, 2022, high winds did appear with wind gusts of 40-65 mph causing fires to rapidly develop across the state of Kansas. A thunderstorm system also traveled across the state causing some fires from lightning strikes.
As extremely dry weather and high winds continue, the Mitchell County Commissioners want to remind the public that no controlled burns are being allowed at this time.
MANHATTAN – On Saturday, April 2, Beloit Junior Senior High School had a team of students participate in the State KidWind Challenge in Topeka. To qualify for the state event, the teams had to place in the top two in their age division at their regional event which was held in Manhattan this past month.
BELOIT – On April 27, 2022 students from NCK Technical College-Beloit Campus will be participating in a training exercise in conjunction with emergency personnel from various organizations within Mitchell County and several surrounding areas. This exercise is designed to simulate the devastation and injuries that may occur from a tornado with the use of special effects make up and props and to allow participants to practice their response efforts to these types of emergencies.
MITCHELL COUNTY – According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Fire Weather Watch is in effect on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, for Smith, Jewell, Osborne, Mitchell counties in Kansas and Polk, Hamilton, York, Adams, Clay, Fillmore, Webster, Nuckolls and Thayer counties in Nebraska.
